The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is recommending that horse owners and veterinarians who have products from BET Pharm, LLC, in Lexington, Ky., not use the products. “The owner should be consulting with their veterinarian to make a decision whether to use what they have on hand,” said Gloria Dunnavan, Director of the Division of Compliance in the FDA’s Center for Veterinary Medicine in Rockville, Md., the evening of Aug. 12. “Is it vital and necessary to the health of the animal? Is there an approved product available? That is an important discussion for the horse owner and vet to have. We would not recommend they (BET products) be used. Any products from BET should be discussed.”

However, Dunnavan added that before an owner discontinues use of a BET product, he or she should consult with a veterinarian and make sure there is a substitute product available. “Not another compounded product, but an approved one,” Dunnavan said
