The Fédération Equestre Internationale (FEI) isn’t yet revealing its findings, but on August 14 it announced the completion of its investigation into doping allegations involving riders and officials of the German Equestrian Federation (German FN).

The German FN disbanded its jumping, eventing, and dressage teams May 28 following a wave of suspensions for doping or forbidden-substance administration, and admissions by other top German riders as well as a former German team veterinarian of past such questionable practices (see “German Equestrian Teams Are Kaput“).  

The sweeping move might have partially been the result of the FEI’s formation May 4 of an ethics panel to investigate the allegations of German impropriety. The panel is known as the Stevens Commission after its chair, former Metropolitan Police Service Commissioner Lord John Stevens. Among the panel’s other three members is 2000 Olympic eventing individual gold medalist and current U.S. Equestrian Federation President David O’Connor.

Alleged horse-world wrongdoings might seem like easy fare for Stevens after the high-profile investigations he’s completed in the past. The top cop in greater London’s largest police force retired in 2005 after a 42-year career, according to BBC News online reports.
