The Piedra Foundation 2000 Spring Seminar will be held on February 26, 2000 at San Luis Rey Downs Resort in Bonsall California (for directions https://www.slrd.com/contact/).
Dr. Wendy Vaala, a board certified equine medical specialist, from the Mid Atlantic Equine Medical Center will present a program on Enteric Diseases of Foals. The program will include medical updates on a wide range of neonatal and perinatal conditions/diseases in foals. Enteric diseases are responsible for large losses in the horse industry each year. This program contains MANY important take home messages for both veterinarians and horsemen. The updated and essential information on the care and management of foals in this program will provide anyone with an interest in horses a head start for this year’s foal crop.
Some of the topics to be discussed will be:
- Signs of Colic and Intestinal Problems in Foals
- How to Distinguish Surgical from Medical Colics in Foals
- Updated Methods of Handling Meconium Impactions in Foals
- Common and Not So Common Causes of Intestinal Diseases in Foals
- How to Know when the Foal with Colic Should be Allowed to Nurse or Have Milk Withheld.
- How the Age of the Foal Helps Determine the Cause of the Enteric Disease
- Prevention and Treatment of Gastric Ulcers in Foals
- How to Determine if a Foal is at High Risk for Enteric Disease
- How to Manage the High Risk Foal
- The Best Methods for Managing Diarrhea in Foals
- Current Deworming Strategies in Foals
