Nearly 60 Welsh ponies are receiving rehabilitative care after being found without access to food or water on a Madison County, Iowa, farm.

In a written statement, the Animal Rescue League of Iowa (ARLI) said its team assisted the Earlham Police Department in removing nearly 60 Welsh ponies that were living in filth without access to food or water on a farm near Des Moines on May 17. Many of the ponies were locked in stalls containing three to four feet of filth, about half were residing in a dry lot, and the rest were residing in a weed-filled pasture with access to water from a small puddle, the statement said.

Investigators also found the remains of two other ponies on the property, the ARLI said.

Earlham Police later arrested the animals’ owner Jim Lemon and charged him with three counts of animal neglect and two counts of failure to properly dispose of a dead animal. If convicted he could face fines and jail time, said Earlham Police Chief Jason Heimdal
