The Delaware state veterinarian has confirmed two cases of West Nile virus (WNV) in horses in Kent County, the Equine Disease Communication Center (EDCC) reported Aug. 29. These are the first confirmed cases of WNV in Delaware horses for 2018.

“A 3-year-old Standardbred mare at a private facility showed an onset of clinical signs on Aug. 19, including ataxia,” the EDCC said. “Diagnostic testing at the National Veterinary Services Laboratory confirmed WNV. The vaccination status of the horse is unknown.”

Additionally, “an unvaccinated 2-year-old Thoroughbred filly at a private facility showed an onset of clinical signs on Aug. 24, including fever, mild ataxia, pharyngeal paralysis, a flaccid tongue, inability to swallow a nasogastric tube, and a stuporous demeanor. The horse is receiving treatment
