WNV in Kentucky: Additional Horse Tests Positive

The 3-year-old Quarter Horse gelding from Carlisle County presented with lethargy and rear-limb ataxia but has improved and has a favorable prognosis. The horse’s current WNV vaccination status is under investigation.

Another Kentucky horse has been diagnosed with West Nile virus (WNV), E.S. Rusty Ford, equine operations consultant for the Kentucky State Veterinarian’s Office, said in an Oct. 26 statement. There are now 14 confirmed cases of WNV in Kentucky horses this year.

Murray State University’s Breathitt Veterinary Center confirmed the diagnoses for the Carlisle County horse on Oct. 25, Ford said.

The 3-year-old Quarter Horse gelding presented on Oct. 22 with lethargy and rear-limb ataxia (incoordination). As of Oct. 25, the horse’s condition was described as “much-improved with a favorable prognosis,” Ford said
