On Tuesday, Dec. 6, at 6:30 p.m., Kyla Ortved, DVM, PhD, Dipl. ACVS, ACVSMR, will present stem cell research during her lecture on “Regenerative Medicine: Can We Help Our Horses Heal?”

The presentation is part of the First Tuesday Lecture Series at the University of Pennsylvania School of Veterinary Medicine’s (Penn Vet) New Bolton Center and will take place at 382 West Street Road, in Kennett Square. This is the last First Tuesday Lecture for the fall season.

Ortved, an orthopedic surgeon and assistant professor of large animal surgery, at Penn Vet, will discuss the varying types of regenerative medicine and their applications in the equine athlete. She will provide in-depth information on new biologics—including stem cells, platelet-rich plasma, and interleukin-1 receptor antagonist protein (IRAP)—and their use in musculoskeletal injuries.

Although Ortved spends much of her time at New Bolton Center treating patients, she also teaches students, and is developing a research program with an emphasis on equine cartilage repair and osteoarthritis
