California Department of Food and Agriculture (CDFA) officials have announced that the equine herpesvirus-4 (EHV-4) quarantine enacted in Imperial County, California, on Aug. 3 has been released. The quarantine was the result of a yearling Quarter Horse filly that displayed acute neurologic signs and subsequently tested positive for EHV-4.

That filly was euthanized, and enhanced biosecurity protocols, including twice-daily temperature monitoring, were enacted at her home premises, where three other horses resided.

On Aug. 6, one of the three other horses, a 17-year-old Quarter Horse mare, was also confirmed positive after she displayed fever but no neurologic signs.

On Aug. 20, no new cases had been reported, and on Aug. 27, the 17-year-old mare tested negative, completing quarantine requirements at the facility
