Michigan Reports Eight New EEE Cases

Fatal cases have clustered in horses located in south central counties of Calhoun, Ionia, Jackson, Kent, Livingston, and Montcalm.

Five More Michigan Horses Test Positive for EEE

Officials at the Michigan Department of Agriculture and Rural Development (MDARD) have confirmed eight new cases of Eastern equine encephalomyelitis (EEE) in six counties: Calhoun, Ionia, Jackson, Kent, Livingston, and Montcalm.

On Aug. 27, an unvaccinated 16-year-old Arabian mare in Kent County presented with clinical signs that included ataxia (loss of muscular control), drooping lip, and facial tremors, progressing to recumbency (down and unable to rise). She was subsequently euthanized and confirmed positive on Sept. 16.

Also in Kent County, an undervaccinated 8-year-old Belgian mare began showing signs that included ataxia and head tilt, progressing to recumbency on Sept. 2. She was euthanized and confirmed positive on Sept. 16
