Two New York men have lost their hunting licenses for three years after being found guilty of killing one horse and wounding another.

In January, the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) began investigating an incident involving two horses shot by coyote hunter in West Sparta, N.Y. One horse was killed and the other received veterinary treatment. According to a DEC spokesperson, both men held licenses and had permission to hunt on the land where the incident occurred.

On Feb. 18, the DEC announced that Christian H. Smith and Glenn R. Gosson were found to have caused the horse shootings.

According to a written statement by the DEC, both men will lose their hunting privileges for three years. They were also ordered to pay restitution for the horses, including the value and burial fees of the deceased horse and the veterinarian bills for the surviving horse. Additionally, the men will each pay a $200 penalty to the State of New York
