Virginia Woman Charged With Animal Cruelty
The operator of a Virginia equine rescue and breeding farm is facing more than 20 animal cruelty charges in connection with the removal of more than 80 allegedly maltreated horses from her Orange County facility.
On Oct. 19, deputies began investigating the conditions at Peaceable Farm near Somerset. During the probe, authorities discovered a herd of 89 allegedly emaciated horses, along with the remains of seven other horses. Investigators also found two donkeys, 28 cats, and seven dogs, the Orange County Sheriff’s Office said. Of the live horses 71 were surrendered by the farm’s owner, Anne Goland (also known as Anne Schumate Williams), along with the dogs and several cats. Goland retained possession of 18 horses, the two donkeys, a bull, and several cats.
Veterinarians subsequently assessed the live horses and euthanized five due to their conditions. On Oct. 21, veterinarians returned to the property to further assess the herd, at which point another 10 horses were determined to be in need of immediate veterinary care. Those horses were seized after Goland declined to surrender them.
All of the seized or surrendered horses have been placed in rehabilitative care, and investigators received permission to conduct welfare checks on the animals that remained in Goland’s possession
