The Michigan State University (MSU) College of Veterinary Medicine is now offering expanded equine dental services, according to a news release from the college. Colleen Porter, DVM, a long-time equine dentist, oversees the school’s dental services.

"The College of Veterinary Medicine now offers an equine dental service that provides a full range of periodontal, endodontic, and restorative procedures," the release read. "For complex conditions and treatments, the service brings together expertise with a team of specialists and surgeons from across the college."

The release noted that the MSU staff will only work on patients with a referral or approval from their treating veterinarian and will work closely with that veterinarian on follow-up care.

"Regular exams with your veterinarian help identify and address problems before they affect a horse’s health or performance," the release added. "Signs might include halitosis (bad breath), dropping feed, weight loss, and performance problems. Some horses have more subtle signs, such as just not seeming to feel well or seeming mildly depressed. Many horses do not exhibit outward signs.
