The American Association of Equine Practitioners’ (AAEP) Tennessee Walking Horse Task Force has issued a white paper on ending soring of the breed’s show horses. The practice of inflicting pain on a horse’s forelegs to induce a higher-action gait has been illegal since the Horse Protection Act was passed by Congress in 1970. However, welfare and industry officials are still working to eradicate the practice, which persists despite the large number of citations issued by the USDA each year.
