The American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) has renewed the accreditation of the Professional Veterinary Medical (PVM) Program at the College of Veterinary Medicine and Biomedical Sciences. The College was informed of the decision on Sept. 30.

“Veterinary programs are reviewed every seven years by the AVMA to ensure they meet the quality standards for accreditation,” said Lance Perryman, DVM, PhD, dean of Colorado State University’s College of Veterinary Medicine and Biomedical Sciences. “We are pleased that the AVMA determined our accreditation status should be renewed until 2015. We will continue to strive for excellence in our veterinary teaching program to the benefit of our students and to greater society as a whole.”

The AVMA review began almost a year ago with the College’s preparation of an extensive self-study document. The self-study was used by the AVMA site review committee in preparation for their site visit which took place April 20-24, 2008. While on campus, the AVMA committee conducted meetings with faculty, staff, and students, and the group visited PVM facilities.

Two areas that the site committee asked the College to address where assessing outcomes of clinical training, and improving the small animal and food animal isolation units. Perryman noted that this year the College will prepare and present a plan to the AVMA for improving clinical training outcomes assessment. The College will plan for renovation of the isolation units at the James L. Voss Veterinary Teaching Hospital to bring those facilities into accordance with AVMA codes and standards.
