The horses used in the University of Findlay’s equestrian studies program stayed high and dry during flooding that submerged much of the town, according to David W. Duncan, business manager at the James L. Child Jr. Equestrian Complex.
The complex houses the school’s English equestrian studies program. Around 90 horses are currently stabled there.
Some horses had to be relocated at the school’s English riding facility after floodwater compromised pastures. |
According to local reports, the Blanchard River, which winds through Findlay, Ohio, crested at 18.5 feet after heavy rainfall. More than 1,000 people were reportedly displaced from their homes.
“We had to move a few horses out of some areas that were starting to get some water in them,” Duncan said. “We have a small number of horses that live outside 24/7 in the summer. We had to bring them up closer to the barn, into some all-weather lots with run-in sheds. Other than that, all the horses stayed nice and dry.”
Some horses also had to be moved at the school’s Western facility, as water entered the pre-vet barn. They were relocated to stalls in the small arena, according to Duncan.
“Overall I think the university got away pretty clean,” Duncan said, noting that school buildings are in good shape.
Classes at the University of Findlay are scheduled to begin Monday
