“We have lots of horses that are in fresh, clean stalls,” reported Rustin Moore, DVM, PhD, Dipl. ACVS, direcotr of the Equine Health Studies Program at the Louisiana State Univerity College of Veterinary Medicine the evening of Tuesday, Sept. 13. “We have had about 350 horses rescued, but thankfully we have release 80 or more to their owners. Our rescued efforts have slowed down considerably because the majority of horses have either been evacuated or they are in areas where they can be fed and provided clean water, and the decision was made by the owners or caretakers not to have them moved.

“We do have two groups out today, and as of a few minutes ago, we have one group brining one horse in and the other group bringing in six–all of these are reportedly healthy,” Moore continued. “The six were found in Covington, La., along the road at a construction site, and after considerable effort to locate people knowing where these horses should be taken, we decided to get them away from the road and this construction site and are transporting them to the safety of the Lamar Dixon Center, where the other horses are being housed. We have left word with the Covington police that if someone calls in looking for their horses where to direct them.”
