The Massachusetts Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (MSPCA) Equine Center at Nevins Farm is on pace to receive and care for a record number of horses in 2009. However, the upcoming warmer months of the year are traditionally when equine adoption rates increase.
“We are currently caring for more than 30 homeless horses both on and off of our property with support from our foster program,” said Melissa Ghareeb, Nevins Farm’s Barn Manager. “The MSPCA, along with the help of new foster family volunteers, is helping horse owners who are struggling to provide care for their animals. We are here to help owners keep their horses as well as find new homes for these animals when necessary.”
The adoption center for farm animals has received 12 horses in the first three months of 2009, seven of which were surrendered due to the financial struggles of their owners. If surrenders continue at this rate the non-profit will receive 48 horses by the end of 2009, compared to 21 horses in 2007 and 39 horses in 2008.
Even as individual owners are facing the increased cost of farriers, hay, grain, and veterinary services, the Equine Center is also impacted by these very same factors. Housing is also a concern since horse adoptions are less frequent than adoptions for small animals. The MSPCA requires an average of $320 every month to care for each horse
