An accident on the track at Churchill Downs the morning of April 27 provided a tragic kickoff to the week leading up to the May 2 Kentucky Derby.

The incident occurred while many of the contenders for the Derby and the Kentucky Oaks were on the track to breeze following the morning maintenance break, although none of them were involved.

Doctor Rap, trained by David Carroll, was ready to work out of the starting gate when he dumped rider Tony Farina and took off in the opposite direction. The sirens signaling the presence of a loose horse sounded as the horse ran into Raspberry Kiss, a filly trained by Ken McPeek. The filly died at Rood & Riddle Equine Hospital in Lexington. Doctor Rap injured his right shoulder, but X rays did not reveal any breaks, Carroll reported.

Farina was not injured in the incident. A Churchill spokesman said the exercise rider who was aboard Raspberry Kiss might have a broken foot
