Eastern equine encephalitis has crossed state boundaries into Mississippi from Louisiana.

According to the Mississippi State Board of Animal Health, more than ten cases of EEE have been confirmed in Mississippi horses. The counties affected by the disease include Alcorn, Clarke, George, Greene, Harrison, Lauderdale, Lincoln, Newton, Pearl River, Scott, Smith, and Winston.

To address the problem, the board has set checkpoints along the Mississippi/Louisiana border. These checkpoints will only allow EEE free horses to enter Mississippi.
