The Virginia Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services confirmed a case of West Nile virus (WNV) in a Washington County horse, the Equine Disease Communication Center (EDCC) reported Oct. 8. This is the third confirmed case of WNV in Virginia horses in 2018.

“An unvaccinated 16-year-old Tennessee Walking Horse mare originally presented the last week of September with a low-grade fever, ataxia, and posterior paresis,” the EDCC said. “Serum from the horse was tested at the National Veterinary Services Laboratories. The horse has slowly improved since onset.”
