More than 300 horses and other animals are being cared for at Los Angeles County, California, shelters since being evacuated ahead of a raging wildfire there.

On July 22, wildfires began burning near Santa Clarita, torching more than 58 square miles and driving more than 20,000 residents from their homes.

“The fire is wind driven and there’s a lot of brush so there’s lots of fuel to feed the fire,” said Aaron Reyes, deputy director of County of Los Angeles Department of Animal Care and Control, “It’s been moving very fast.”

Reyes said 345 horses, along with mules, donkeys, and hundreds of other animals, were evacuated ahead of the blaze. All the displaced animals are being cared for at eight shelters operated by the County of Los Angeles Department of Animal Care and Control. A combination of shelter staff, volunteers and owners are caring for the animals at the shelters, Reyes said
