  1. My Morgan gelding goes nuts on July 4th. Only this year, he has a fractured navicular bone. So, for the first time, I lightly sedated him to help him remain calm through the worst of the fireworks.

  2. My horses aren’t bothered by fireworks; they seem to treat the sounds the same as the sound of gun shots.

  3. The very worst equine accident I experienced was on the 4th of July when a neighbor began a pounding long display. My yearling filly panicked in the field and attempted to jump the hot wire which in those days was heavy gauge metal wire, not woven tape. The filly got hung up on the wire for over 45 minutes of intense electrical burns and degloving of skin from her stomach, stifles and her entire hind legs de-gloved. It was awful and we couldn’t get a even one of 12 vets to come out the help her. Burns are bad enough, but the continual electrical charge pulsing through her body did neural damage after 45 minutes. To this very day, I always stay close to my horses at night during 4th of July and New Years.
