  1. We have two older horses that we allow to graze out fenced in yard. I noticed that they seemed to enjoy drinking the clean pool water. i had noticed their troughs did seem to grow algae living in south florida. I thought I would try adding a few of the left over chips from the pool tabs to their troughs. After a few days their water cleared up and no more algae. So my question is it safe for them to drink the water if I add a few chips from the pool chemical in their water.

  2. Weekly wipe surface bowl – no other cleaning necessary with my automatic waterers (no standing water = no algae or insects)

  3. Every five days (or fewer) during mosquito and algae season; every 10-14 days in winter … and of course more often if needed (ie, debris blows in).

  4. My horses live turned out in pasture 24/7 and have large stock tanks for their water. I keep goldfish and/or mosquitofish in the tanks as they eat the mosquitoes and other bugs as well as the algae that forms on the sides of the tanks. If the water becomes cloudy or otherwise doesn’t look/smell right, or horses and other livestock are avoiding a particular tank, I will empty it out and clean it.
