Two Arizona women are facing felony theft charges after they were arrested for allegedly stealing a Mohave County horse.

Mohave County Sheriff’s Department spokeswoman Trish Carter said deputies discovered a horse tied to a post in a residential backyard in an area not zoned for livestock while on patrol Jan. 21. A man at the scene informed deputies that his sister and his girlfriend had brought the horse home the night before and that the two women had gone off to buy feed for the horse, Carter said.

During the investigation that followed deputies determined that the horse was stolen, Carter said. The horse’s owner identified the animal through its unique markings and unique shoes, she said.

“The horse was identified as a registered Quarter Horse,” Carter said, “The owner said it was worth $10,000
