Neurologic EHV-1 Confirmed in Virginia Horse

The Virginia Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services (VADCS) has confirmed that a horse in western Albemarle County has tested positive for the neurologic form of equine herpesvirus-1 (EHV-1), also known as equine herpesvirus myeloencephalopathy.
In a statement on its website, the VADCS said the affected 14-year-old gelding began showing signs on Jan. 31 and became recumbent (unable to rise) on Feb. 1, The horse was treated and is now in stable condition, the statement said.
The statement indicated that the horse is located at a boarding stable at which 14 other horses reside. The VDACS has contacted the stable manager and placed the facility under quarantine; no horses are allowed to exit or enter the premises until the quarantine is released.
An epidemiologic investigation is underway, the statement said; initial findings indicate that only one exposed horse from the facility has left the premises within the last 14 days, and that horse went out of state
