Strong storms that swept through Virginia last week claimed the life of a horse residing at a rescue there.

A statement on the Roanoke Valley Horse Rescue website said that on June 18 high winds accompanied by a severe thunderstorm tore sheet metal from the roof of a barn at the facility, located in Hardy. Flying debris severely injured a mare in a nearby pasture. She was ultimately euthanized due to her injuries, the website said.

Severe weather has hammered many parts of the country in recent weeks and more could be on the way. National Weather Service Storm Prediction Center outlooks call for more significant storms, including tornadoes, in the Midwest and flash flooding in Texas and Oklahoma.

In Virginia, the operators of the storm-damaged horse rescue are rebuilding, Internet postings say
