The remains of a 4-month-old filly from the Chincoteague wild pony herd have been found on the grounds of the Chincoteague Volunteer Fire Company.

Made famous by the novel Misty of Chincoteague by Marguerite Henry, the wild ponies reside on Assateague Island separated by a fence at the Maryland-Virginia line. The Maryland herd is managed by the National Park Service, while the Virginia herd is managed by the Chincoteague Volunteer Fire Company. Each year the fire company purchases a grazing permit from the National Fish and Wildlife Service that allows them to maintain a herd of approximately 150 adult ponies on Assateague Island. Chincoteague Volunteer Fire Company Public Information Officer Roe Terry said that about 70 foals are born on the Virginia side each spring, and approximately 75% of the mares have foals each year.

Chincoteague Police Chief Randy Mills said the filly, named Dreamer’s Faith, went missing in September.

“We investigated and … found nothing,” Mills said
