Horse and pet owners are being reminded to secure their animals this New Year’s Eve ahead of noisy fireworks displays.

“Every year there is a spike in the number of animals that go missing over the New Year period across the state,” said New South Wales, Australia, Department of Primary Industries Acting Director Animal Biosecurity Juliet Corish.

“Fireworks, with the combination of bright lights and very loud noises, can be distressing for our animals and can cause them to become anxious and even take flight," she explained. “In particular, dogs and horses can be easily scared by fireworks and it’s important for owners to take a few precautions ahead of the holiday in order to protect their pets.”
