CANTER Mid-Atlantic is celebrating a milestone year for transitioning ex-racehorses into second careers through its free online sales listings. The online sales website served nearly 150 trainers at six racetracks in 2012 who listed 350 racehorses nearing the end of their racing careers.

"It’s a huge benefit," said Laurel Park trainer Tim Tullock in a release. "It’s very hard to find good homes for our horses and CANTER Mid-Atlantic and its volunteers provide an invaluable service."

In 2012, CANTER Mid-Atlantic volunteers made more than 200 trips to Hollywood Casino at Charles Town Races and Mountaineer Casino Racetrack & Resort in West Virginia; Pimlico Race Course, Bowie Training Center, and Laurel Park in Maryland; and Delaware Park in Delaware to meet with trainers and owners of horses that are ready to retire from racing but are capable of beginning a second career.

"CANTER Mid-Atlantic is a 100% volunteer organization," said CANTER-Mid Atlantic executive director Allie Conrad in a statement. "Our volunteers are dedicated to helping the Thoroughbred racing community find appropriate homes for their horses when they are ready for second careers
