A group of foals was relocated to drier quarters this week after the first downpour of Florida’s rainy season flooded their pen near West Palm Beach.

Jennifer Swanson, founder and director of the Pure Thoughts Rescue, Inc., in Loxahatchee, Fla., said that in the early hours of June 6, heavy rain from Tropical Storm Andrea swept across the state, causing flooding in many locations. When the storm flooded their pen at the rescue, Swanson and Bradley Gaver, her husband and rescue co-founder, relocated six of the animals to higher ground at a neighbor’s property. Another four were taken to Wellington, Fla., to wait out the storm. One foal died after being struck by lightning, Swanson said.

All those foals had been rescued earlier this year from a Kentucky nurse mare farm, she said.
