A wild horse advocacy group has expanded its existing lawsuit against the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) which alleges that the agency is likely to carry out a pair of gathers using inhumane techniques. The suit also alleges the BLM will violate the U.S. Constitution by conducting the 2013 foaling season out of public view.

In 2011, wild horse advocate Laura Leigh, now president of the wild horse advocacy group Wild Horse Education (WHE), asked a federal judge to stop a gather at the Triple B Complex on grounds that contractors drove exhausted horses to trapping areas using inhumane methods, and operated helicopters dangerously close to exhausted animals. The court subsequently granted a temporary restraining order in regard to the gather and a preliminary injunction against the helicopter pilot.

On June 12, Leigh said that WHE was amending its court filing to add anticipated conduct at the Triple B Complex and Jackson Mountain Herd Management Areas, alleging that roundup operations will be based on bait trapppings and would likely result in inhumane conduct. The amendment also alleges that the BLM will deny the observers’ First Amendment rights by conducting established foaling season out of public view.

BLM spokesman Tom Gorey declined to comment
