The University of Missouri (MU) Extension will host an equine short course, "From Hoof to Hay," on Oct. 3, 8, and 10, at the Good Samaritans Boys Ranch’s Jim D. Morris Building in Brighton.

According to the program brochure, "Owning horses can be challenging—from selecting the most suitable breed to proper nutritional health and grazing management. This 3-night equine short course is an educational series designed for the beginner horse enthusiast or as a refresher course for the intermediate horse owner."

Lecture topics and presenters throughout the three nights will include:

• Costs of Owning a Horse—Wesley Tucker, MU Extension agriculture business specialist
• Facilities and Equipment—Andy McCorkill, MU Extension livestock specialist  
• Selection and Safety—Sue Webb, MS, senior instructor of equine science at Missouri State University
• Forage and Grazing Management—Brie Menjoulet, MU Extension agronomy specialist 
• Equine Nutrition—Patrick Davis, PhD, MU Extension livestock specialist
• Equine Health—Jim Joyce, DVM, of Southwest Veterinary LLC, in Fair Grove, Mo.
• Hoof Care—Shane England, of S&K Farrier Services in Brighton, Mo.

The course costs $40 per person, or $60 for each pair. Registration is required by Sept. 25. A minimum of 15 participants is required to hold the short course, and the maximum class size will be limited to the first 35 registrants
