The Chicago Police Department is offering a cash reward for information leading to the arrest and conviction of those responsible for injuring  two horses used in the department’s mounted unit.

On Tuesday (Sept. 18) Chicago Police Officer Mike Sullivan told The Horse that around 11 p.m. on Sept. 16 trainers assigned to the unit discovered that 27 of the 30 horses residing in the stables had been released from their stalls and that two horses had been injured. One horse sustained chemical burns to his face after being sprayed with a fire extinguisher, Sullivan said. The other animal sustained wounds after apparently being hit, he said. The injured horses have been treated and are recovering, Sullivan said.

"The other horses were not hurt during the incident," Sullivan said.

On July 19, Chicago Police Officer John Mirabelli said that the Department is offering a $5,000 cash reward for information leading to the arrest and conviction of those responsible for the incident
