Two horses belonging to the Chicago Police Department’s Mounted Unit were treated for injuries sustained during a break-in at the unit’s stables at the South Shore Cultural Center.

Chicago Police Officer Mike Sullivan said that around 11 p.m. on Sept. 16 trainers assigned to the unit discovered that 27 of the 30 horses residing in the stables had been released from their stalls and that two horses had been injured. One horse sustained chemical burns to face after being sprayed with a fire extinguisher, Sullivan said. The other animal sustained wounds after apparently being hit, he said. The injured horses have been treated and are recovering, Sullivan said.

"The other horses were not hurt during the incident," Sullivan said.

The incident remains under investigation
