Two Chicago youths are facing charges in connection with the alleged injury of horses belonging to the Chicago Police Department last month.

The injured horses were among 30 contained in the Chicago Police Department’s stables at the South Shore Cultural Center on the city’s south side when 27 of the animals were released from their stalls during an apparent break-in at the facility. One horse sustained chemical burns after being sprayed with a fire extinguisher. The second animal was wounded after apparently being hit with an object. The remaining horses were uninjured.

On Oct. 29, Chicago Police Officer John Mirabelli said that a 14-year-old and a 16-year-old have been charged with one count of felony burglary and five counts of injury to a police animal in connection with the break-in.
