On May 3 the University of Pennsylvania’s New Bolton Center (NBC) will present a lecture entitled "You Think It’s Colic but It’s Not" at 6:30 p.m. The lecture is part of the First Tuesdays Lecture Series at the School of Veterinary Medicine at New Bolton Center. The series offers to the public free, open lectures on equine topics on the first Tuesday of each month.

The lecture will be presented by Barbara Dallap Schaer, VMD, Dipl. ACVS, ACVECC, an associate professor at New Bolton Center. Dallap will discuss horses presenting to NBC with signs similar to those of colic that were ultimately diagnosed with disorders of other body systems. The presentation will focus on several diseases that might present similar to colic.

"While colic signs as a result of gastrointestinal disease are the number-one reason horses are referred to veterinary hospitals, similar symptoms can be a result of neuromuscular, urogenital, or even cardiovascular problems," she said.

The First Tuesday Lecture Series offers New Bolton Center an opportunity to share current information on topics of interest and relevance to horse owners and caregivers throughout the region. The series of one-hour lectures covers a wide range of veterinary subjects, each presented by a New Bolton Center clinician with expertise in the subject
