A horse used in rodeo bucking events was euthanized after sustaining a broken leg during the opening day of the Orange Blossom Festival Rodeo, in Davie, Fla.

In a written statement Davie Pro Rodeo spokesman Troy Weekley said that on Feb. 25, the 10-year-old bucking horse named Elvira was competing in an event when it ran into a fence, fell over, and later died from its injuries. Florida Department of Agriculture Public Information Officer Mark Fagan said a veterinarian at the scene reported that the horse had sustained a broken leg and was humanely euthanized.

"There were no red flags (connected to the incident)," Fagan said.

In his statement Weekley said the incident was "a tragic accident
