Q: I am almost 100% sure my 5-month-old weanling has ringworm. She has white hairless flaky patches around her eyes and her muzzle. It is winter here, so it is very hard to shampoo her entire body. What would you recommend for treatment? I’ve heard using a one-time treatment with topical iodine and daily use of bag balm works. I need a cold weather-friendly treatment.

A: Your horse could very well have the fungal skin infection known as ringworm. I would recommend applying a topical iodine cream to the affected area. Or you can mix the iodine cream with some miconazole cream. You should be able to purchase the miconazole and iodine at any drug store.

Wash the area with a mild soap and dry it thoroughly. Then apply a small amount of the cream mixture to the affected area
