Unbeaten Peppers Pride, a 5-year-old mare, raced to her 17th victory in a row–a record for a modern North American Thoroughbred–in a sprint Saturday (Oct. 4) at Zia Park in Hobbs, N.M.

Peppers Pride won a $38,200 allowance race for New Mexico-breds.

Peppers Pride had shared the record of 16 consecutive victories with Citation, the 1948 Triple Crown winner; Cigar, a two-time Horse of the Year in the 1990s; Mister Frisky, eighth as the favorite in the 1990 Kentucky Derby; and Hallowed Dreams, a 3-year-old filly when she matched the record in 2000.

Undefeated Peppers Pride, trained by Joel Marr and ridden by Carlos Madeira, ran 6 furlongs in 1 minute 101/5 seconds to beat 4-year-old filly Silver Expression by 1-¾ lengths. Peppers Pride, owned and bred by Joe Allen, returned $2.40 on a $2 win bet
