“Heat, humidity, and extra speed, coupled with steep hills, made Indian Cave a tough ride,” commented competitor Lucy Hirsch, DVM, after finishing the Oct. 11-12 competitive trail ride. Hirsch rode alongside 37-year-old Half-Arabian Elmer Bandit, who’s approaching the record for lifetime competitive miles.
At the pulse and respiration checks, Elmer’s owner and rider Mary Anna Wood reported she had to “fan Elmer really hard to help him cool off.”

Mary Anna Wood holds 37-year-old Elmer Bandit as he’s examined by Pat Regier, DVM, at the Indian Cave ride.
The Nebraska completion brings Elmer’s lifetime mileage, unofficially, to 20,660. He’s now only 50 miles from Saddlebred Wing Tempo‘s record of 20,710.
Wood and Elmer are scheduled to compete October 25-26 at Kanopolis State Park, north of Lindsborg, Kan., at the Region 6 Benefit Ride.
