According to an Associated Press article on ksby.com, federal officials have launched an investigation into the deaths of 55 wild horses and an antelope found close to a watering hole on a Central Nevada ballistics and bombing range.
 
A statement released Tuesday (July 24) by the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) and the Air Force said the deaths are thought to have been caused by the pond, which is located on a dry lake bed on the Tonophah Test Range.


Tissue from the animals and water samples have been submitted for testing, confirmed a BLM official, and results might not be available for a week. In the meantime, authorities have fenced off the pond and set up fresh water tanks for the horses and burros (an estimated 250) in the area.


In addition to the BLM and the Air Force, the Energy Departmendt and National Nuclear Security Administration are also involved in the examination
