After showing up to her sentencing 20 minutes late on July 19, Kathleen Nygaard faces 90 days in jail, according to WLEX-TV. Nygaard is charged with seven counts of animal cruelty after humane officials were alerted to dead and starving horses in January on a Central Kentucky horse farm she had been leasing.


Judge Joseph Bouvier also sentenced Nygaard to two years probation and will not allow her to care for any animals during that time except her cat and turtle, reported WLEX.


Nygaard faces another court date Aug. 1, when the judge will decide if Nygaard will pay restitution to the Lexington Humane Society for caring for the animals they seized. Four of the horses that were seized required serious medical attention and were treated by Kristy Amer, DVM, a resident in internal medicine at Hagyard Equine Medical Institute near Lexington
