A mare was extracted on Dec. 27 from a Black Country canal in Central England after spending up to 10 hours overnight in the icy water. The incident was described by the Express & Star, a British evening newspaper (www.expressandstar.com/articles/news/es/article_84889.php).

Rescuers were alerted when a motorist saw the mare’s foal standing at the edge of the canal. The mare “is thought to have spent most of the night in Wyrley and Essington Canal in Goscote, Walsall, and was pulled out of the icy water by four firefighters using a rope.” The firefighters were from a specially trained water incident unit.

The mare was freed from her mishap by 8:30 a.m. and taken to stables nearby to be examined by a veterinarian. According to an update in the Mirror online, despite initial fears of hypothermia, the mare is expected to survive
