Investigators are searching for information on the shooting death of a pregnant wild horse found Dec. 27, 2005, on the Outer Banks of Currituck County, N.C. A resident found the 2-year-old shot in the stomach, said the Currituck County Sheriff’s Office.

Donna and Gene Snow, former co-directors of the Corolla Wild Horse Fund (CWHF), mounted a search operation, concerned additional horses might be found shot.

“The last time this happened (2001), we found four others (shot) within about a half-mile radius of the initial horse (using a helicopter),” said Donna Snow. Luckily, this was an isolated incident.

The CWHF maintains about 60 wild horses of Spanish descent north of Corolla. They are allowed to roam the 400 acres of the Currituck National Wildlife Refuge, but sometimes venture into neighboring communities. The Fund manages the herd’s population by holding annual adoptions
