The Independent Veterinary Group (IVG), LLC, has been formed by Doug Byars, DVM, Dipl. AVECC, ACVIM, and others in response to the needs of the many solo practitioners in and around Kentucky who operate independently of a university or large private veterinary firm.

The Bluegrass region of Kentucky has several high-profile equine referral hospitals, but a significant number of the state’s equine practitioners are unassociated with a referral or group practice, noted Byars. This means they must order and maintain their own inventory of pharmaceuticals and supplies, do their own bookkeeping and scheduling, run their own samples to laboratories and pick up results, and often have no technicians to assist in procedures requiring an experienced handler or vet tech.
