Tattoo Charlie, a 15-hand bay Quarter Horse gelding, turned up yesterday (Aug. 14) in a field in Monroe County, N.Y., after he had been missing for more than seven days.

Charlie and three of his pasturemates were spooked early on the morning of Aug. 7, after which they escaped their enclosure. The three other horses were found within a day, but Charlie’s tracks led into the Genesee River and search parties were unable to confirm his exit point.

Lorie Croston, Charlie’s owner, told The Horse last night, “He was across the river, camped out near a stream in a bean field. He has a very serious gash in his hind left leg, but the vet is optimistic that he has a good chance at making a full recovery.

“Charlie has a lot of healing up to do, but we are so incredibly relieved to have him home,” she added. “Thank you for your support
