The NAERIC Incentive Program, a concept designed to revolutionize the marketing of pregnant mares’ urine (PMU) ranch-bred horses, was announced March 30, 1998, at the 1998 Royal Manitoba Winter Fair. The program, designed by the North American Equine Ranching Information Council (NAERIC), matches dollar for dollar, up t o $1 million, monies that have been awarded to PMU horses through purses, breeders’ trust funds, and other incentive programs.

Funding is made possible through a corporate sponsorship from Wyeth-Ayerst Laboratories, the manufacturers of Premarin–a hormone replacement therapy derived from PMU. “This opportunity is another way to support the equine ranchers who are so important to Wyeth-Ayerst and the outstanding husbandry techniques they use in caring for and breeding these fine horses,” said Dr. Rob Walker, Director of Quality & Technical Affairs at Ayerst Organics. “We are pleased to support the ranching profession that has been such a valuable partner to women’s health care, and we are proud of the efforts ranchers continually take to enhance their ranches and the quality of horses they produce.”

The quality and value of PMU ranch-bred horses is the “best kept secret in North America,” remarked veteran reining horse trainer and California horseman Benny Guitron, who recently purchased a PMU ranch-bred horse at the 1997 National Reining Horse Association Futurity.

“Knowledgeable horsemen and women have long recognized the quality horses we breed and now is the time to reward the buyers of PMU ranch-bred horses with additional earnings when those horses are successful at horse shows, arena competitions, or any qualifying event,” said Norm Luba, executive director of NAERIC
