Law enforcement authorities at the Assateague Island National Seashore are investigating after the driver of a vehicle apparently hit and killed a wild horse earlier this month.

Jester, an 18-year-old stallion was discovered dead on the causeway near the bridge in Maryland on Oct. 5, said Deborah A. Darden, superintendent of the Assateague Island National Seashore. Law enforcement personnel found no visible signs of trauma on the horse’s body, and the case of death is presumed to have been severe internal injuries, she said.

The driver involved was identified at a 70-year-old woman from Silver Spring, Maryland. She was unhurt in the incident.
