Today, Equine ER continues its investigative report into the non-world-shaking issue of Vet Love. Last week, we explored the fact that because of the predominance of women over men in vet school, it’s tough for straight women to find dates among their classmates. Today we continue our discussion, which includes such topics as overly watchful brothers and the ancillary issue of a lack of cute shoes to wear on farm calls.

Once, I was out on farm calls with a senior vet, a male intern, and a twenty-two-year-old female extern. The extern could have been a Ralph Lauren model: she was a slender equestrian with long straight hair, green eyes, angel skin. When the subject came up about the roughly 8:2 ratio of women to men at her school, she nodded sadly and said, “Yeah. I didn’t do too well.” Another young woman veterinarian I met at one of the barns told me she looked for prospective dates in engineering classes.
