California Confirms Tenth Equine WNV Case of 2017
The California Department of Food and Agriculture (CDFA) has reported the year’s 10th case of West Nile virus (WNV) confirmed in a horse in that state.
“On Aug. 28, 2017, a 1-year-old Quarter Horse colt with no vaccination history in Lassen County displaying neurologic signs was confirmed positive for WNV,” the CDFA said in a statement on its website. “The colt is recovering.
“For 2017, a total of 10 horses have been confirmed positive for WNV,” the statement continued. “The positive horses were located in Glenn, Contra Costa, Fresno, Kern (2), Riverside (2), Plumas, Lassen, and San Joaquin counties. Seven horses were unvaccinated and three horses had unknown vaccination status. Six horses died or were euthanized and four horses are recovering.”
In 2016 California confirmed 21 equine WNV cases in 10 counties, according to USDA Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service statistics
